About Phatt Ruby - Some bands play songs. We play the room.

This Portland trio doesn’t cross genres — they bury the borders. Blues standards, classic rock, hard rock, alternative, pop, light dance: six decades of music dragged onstage and made theirs.

Carey Calhoun lit the fuse in 2004, Mike Lynch hasn’t stopped hitting since 2005, and Grant Stampfli locked down the low end in 2020. Between them: thirty years of stages won across the Midwest and Northwest, a batch of originals headed for the studio — and live is where they live. Book them when you want a dance floor with a pulse.

On stage - One rule: energy matters.

Three players, one conviction — the room comes first.

  • No lanes. Blues standards, classic rock, hard rock, alternative, pop, light dance — most bands pick a lane because they have to. These three never had to.
  • No coasting. Consistent grooves, strong intros and outros, harmonies wherever a song asks for them — possibly the hardest-working rhythm section around.
  • No standing still. Originals are on the way, but live is where the band lives. Book them when you want a dance floor with a pulse.

The band - Meet the band

A rhythm section that never sits back and a frontman who ties it all together — here’s who does what.

Carey Calhoun

Carey Calhoun

Guitar, lead vocals & keys

With the band since

Carey possesses the unusual kind of musical range that enables him to perform rich, soulful melodies and the hard, edgy styles popular in today's music. He plays lead, rhythm and acoustic guitar as well as keyboards, and has developed well-rounded skills as a songwriter and lyricist.

Carey has long-standing performance and recording experience, and his musical vision serves as a unifying force for the band. He possesses naturally adept vocal and guitar skills, but also works hard to develop new techniques that let him stretch his musical talent.

Carey also occupies the lead vocal chair and plays keyboards in the Portland-based Groove Syndicate — another great band to get out and see.

Mike Lynch

Mike Lynch

Drums & harmony vocals

With the band since

Mike is an experienced rock drummer with multiple styles and a broad background of musical knowledge. Besides keeping great time, he plays with drive and energy and has a natural ability for song arrangements.

He enhances the groove by playing consistent patterns and embellishes Phatt Ruby's sound with strong intros and outros. Mike's solid feel provides the foundation for the band's energy as he rounds out possibly the hardest-working rhythm section around — and he adds harmony vocals when needed.

Grant Stampfli

Grant Stampfli

Bass & vocals

With the band since

Grant's rich musical background and experience make him the ideal bassist for Phatt Ruby. He writes music and has played many forms of it, and you can hear that in the solid, melodic patterns made possible by education, experience and true dedication to the bass guitar.

Grant also sings and plays guitar, trombone and keyboards. His experience and approach with the bass translate to many musical forms, but as he puts it:

“Rock is my favorite bass style because there's nothing like settling into a rock groove and letting it take you over.”
